The Metropolitan Washington Alumni Chapter News

 

January 2017:

The chapter ended 2016 with a joyful pot luck Christmas celebration at the Urban League in Washington, DC.  

With the start of 2017, some members of The Metropolitan Washington Alumni Chapter (pictured at left) went to see the movie "Hidden Figures”. Everyone enjoyed the movie, followed by lunch at a downtown Silver Spring, MD restaurant.


 

Eastern Region Scholarship Recipient - Miss Deja Smoot

Miss WVSU, Deja Smoot during the
2016 Homecoming Award’s Dinner where she was recognized as the Eastern Region Scholarship Recipient.

October 2016:

The Eastern Region and Baltimore Alumni Chapter are pleased to announce that Ms. Deja Smoot, a lead cheerleader at WVSU, was recently awarded the Eastern Region Scholarship for the 2016 -2017 academic year. Ms. Smoot transferred to state as a freshman from Howard University. She made the decision to attend State based on her relationship with her mentor, Baltimore City College Guidance Counselor Mrs. Autumn (Anderson) Carr (Baltimore WVSUAA Secretary 2012-2016 and WVSUNAA 2014 Young Professional Award Recipient).

Deja is a sophomore majoring in Elementary Education at West Virginia State University. She is an exceptional student who manages to maintain her Dean's List status at WVSU while mentoring other students and serving the University and the local community with volunteer efforts. Deja works with the organization Angels Inspired to help raise money and awareness for children with cancer, she is a member of the WVSU Cheer Squad and Student Support Services as well as a member of Nu Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and serves as Miss Kappa Alpha Psi 2016-2017. This young lady is a great inspiration for fellow students and all alums and we are extremely proud of her enthusiasm, service, and commitment to excellence!
