Our Legacy
On June 2, 1926, the Alpha Delta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was chartered at West Virginia Collegiate Institute, now West Virginia State University, by seven dynamic women: Leonead Drain Bailey, Alice Curtis Forte, Mildred Grayson, Mabel Redmond, Elaine Tancil, Winnie Page Thomas, and Lucille Vanhook. These visionary women were initiated into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. by three West Virginia State University faculty members who were Deltas: Lucy Cash Jones, Mary Strong, and Mary Lane.
Together, our seven charter members established a lasting foundation of sisterhood, scholarship, service, and social action—principles that have guided Alpha Delta Chapter for a century. Mildred Grayson proudly served as the chapter's first president, leading with vision and purpose during its formative years.
The legacy of our charter members continues to inspire us today. In recognition of her distinguished service as Head Librarian at West Virginia State University from 1949 to 1956, Leonead Justine Drain Bailey helped plan the Drain-Jordan Library, which opened in 1951 and proudly bears her name as a lasting tribute to her dedication and leadership.
