Ericke S. Cage Named Interim President of West Virginia State University 
The West Virginia State University (WVSU) Board of Governors voted to name Ericke S. Cage as the university's interim president.

Cage's appointment was approved by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission (HEPC). He will serve as interim president until a new permanent president for the university is selected. 


Cage joined the university in July as vice president and chief of staff and has been serving as the university's chief operating officer managing the university's day-to-day operations since July 30.

"I am both honored and humbled by the trust the West Virginia State University Board of Governors has placed in me to serve as interim president of this great institution," said Cage. "Since my arrival here, I have strived to do what is right for the students, faculty, and staff of the university, and that will continue in my new role. We have tremendous momentum at West Virginia State, and I look forward to all we will accomplish working together in the months ahead." Click here to read more.

President's Homecoming Welcome Brunch
WVSU Homecoming Night Game! 
WVSU is excited to announce the first-ever on-campus night game! Join us, Saturday the 16th at 6 pm as the new lights illuminate the turf field! 
WVSU Oral History Project

WVSU is collaborating with a trusted partner, PCI, the company that produces our alumni directory, on a new project. The goal of the WVSU Oral History Project is to collect stories of alumni like you in your own words and preserve them in a book that celebrates the impact WVSU had on your lives. 

To date, 1,204 alumni stories have been collected! Please make sure you respond to the communication sent from PCI so your history with WVSU can live on for years to come! We look forward to hearing your stories from the place we love so dear! 

In Memory of Joey Oden, '89
In September of 2021, the entire campus community lost a great friend, mentor, and colleague with the passing of Joseph "Joey" R. Oden, Jr.

Joey will always be a part of the State story, and his legacy will continue through the support of the Joey Oden Memorial Scholarship Fund at West Virginia State University.

WVSU Night at Appalachian Power Park
WVSU's Office of Alumni Relations and the WVSU Baseball Team came out to support former Yellow Jacket, Matt Harrison, '20, the starting pitcher for the September 22 game. Harrison was drafted to West Virginia's semi-pro team, the West Virginia Power (now the Dirty Birds), after graduating from WVSU in 2020. 
Alumni Spotlight 
Matt Browning, '04, is the Director for Extension and Research Station Communications at WVSU. Browning recently published 'The Definitive Golden Girls Cultural Reference Guide,' a lifelong Golden Girls fan and aficionado who founded EmptyNestTV.com in 1998. Matt has also published two other books, 'Chicks and the City' and 'Bookstore Explorer: West Virginia' (based on his blog of the same name). Click here to read more.

HBCU Tip-Off 
West Virginia State was invited to Chris Paul's HBCU Tip-Off that will take place on November 22nd and 23rd at Mohegan Sun Arena with four Historically Black Colleges and Universities participating. The two-day doubleheader will feature West Virginia State University, Morehouse College, Virginia Union University, and Winston-Salem State University. Click here to read more. 
WVSU Healthy Grandfamilies 
The WVSU Healthy Grandfamilies program, which provides information, education, and resources to grandparents raising their grandchildren, has received an honorable mention as a 2021 Exceptional Local Program from the Association of Northeast Extension Directors. Click here to read more.
 
Katherine Johnson Day Recognized August 26
The university held an observance and wreath-laying on August 26 to celebrate the life and legacy of alumna Katherine Johnson whose pioneering work at NASA helped America to win the space race. The ceremony featured the awarding of three Katherine Johnson scholarships to current STEM students and a donation to the Katherine Johnson Scholarship Fund made by Dr. Elisha Lewis, Assistant Professor of Education at WVSU, and Mrs. West Virginia American 2021.
Eric L. Jackson Named Interim Chief of Staff for WVSU
Eric L. Jackson has been appointed interim chief of staff for West Virginia State Univesity. 

Jackson has been with the university since 2007 and most recently served as director, Title III Programs and Budget Office, a position he will continue to serve in. 


As interim chief of staff, Jackson will serve as a liaison to the WVSU Board of Governors and to the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, as well as directing the president's office staff and handle matters of policy and institutional importance.

"Eric will serve as an important member of the senior leadership team as we work to move the university forward in the months ahead," said WVSU Interim President Ericke S. Cage. " His knowledge of the higher education landscape and his experience in progressive leadership roles will play a vital role in our planning and success." Click here to read more.

Dr. Ami Smith Named Interim Vice President for Research and Public Service at WVSU
Dr. Ami M. Smith has been named interim vice president for research and public service and dean and director of land-grant programs at WVSU.

Smith has served as the university's associate vice president for public service and director of WVSU Extension Service since 2015 and previously served as interim associate vice president for research from 2015 to 2018.
"Dr. Smith has a strong history of leadership and service to West Virginia State University in a variety of management roles, and I trust in her vision to continue to grow our research and public service initiatives for the benefit of the citizens of West Virginia," said Interim President, Ericke S. Cage. "She will be a valuable member of the university's senior leadership team." Click here to read more.
