The West Virginia State University (WVSU) Board of Governors has chosen Dr. Nicole Pride to become the 12th president of the University.
Pride currently serves as the vice provost for academic strategy and operations at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. She will begin at WVSU on September 1.
“I am excited to join West Virginia State University. It is an institution with such a rich history, and I look forward to working with members of the State family to continue to advance its land-grant mission,” said Pride. The opportunities for the University in the years ahead continue to meet the economic development and prosperity needs of the state and region are immense and I am honored to be selected to lead this growth.” Read More
Greetings West Virginia State Family! I hope this finds you well, safe and enjoying the last of your summer. It has been an honor to serve as Interim President of our beloved West Virginia State University. In my 54-year association with West Virginia State University, I have never seen a time like the one we are in now, responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since March, I have been continually amazed by the hard work and dedication of our faculty and staff, first in devising a plan to finish the spring semester, and then in working together through the summer to draft, finalize and implement our campus reopening plan, Focus on WVSU, Reopening This “Place We Love So Dear.”
As we prepare to welcome back students, staff, and faculty, they will notice many changes to campus designed to protect the health and safety of all members of the State Family. This includes screening stations with temperature checks and a series of health questions at each building. Classrooms have been modified, too, with the addition of cameras and other technology, to allow students to participate in discussions without being physically in attendance. Over 80 percent of our classes will now be able to be delivered in this manner. We have spent months planning to ensure to the best of our ability that State is a safe environment for living, working, and learning on our campus.
We are reinvigorating the National Center for Human Relations, which focuses on race, domestic and interfaith relations. Additionally, plans are in place to establish an Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at WVSU.
On September 1, Dr. Nicole Pride will be joining our West Virginia State Family as our University’s 12th President. I have been in regular communication with Dr. Pride and she is excited to be joining us at such an important moment in our University’s history. Please be sure to give her a warm State welcome.
I am proud of all we have accomplished in the short time I have served as Interim President. Thank you for allowing me to serve. I am confident President Pride will continue to push WVSU forward.
Sincerely,
R. Charles Byers, Ph.D. Interim President

Donate to Homecoming 2020
Dear Yellow Jackets,
Each year, we look forward to welcoming our alumni and friends to campus to celebrate and enjoy “a place we love so dear,” but this year, due to COVID-19, Homecoming 2020 has officially been canceled.
While it was a difficult decision, we know you understand as we did so in consideration of your safety and wellbeing. Homecoming has always been a great opportunity to catch up with old friends and make new ones, and to strengthen our ties to our University.
Although we won’t be gathering in person this year, we invite you to consider donating all or a significant portion of what you would have spent during your annual trip back to our beloved institution.
Your gift will help the National Alumni Association, Alumni Relations and the WVSU Foundation provide support to our University and students during this challenging time. We hope to see each of you at Homecoming 2021, as we anticipate being able to celebrate on the campus of our beautiful alma mater! Go State!
Lateef Y. Saffore, Ph.D., MS, ’96 National President, WVSUNAA

In Memoriam: WVSU’s Oldest Living Alumna Passes Away at age 105
Daisy Marianne Anderson Alston ’36 passed away peacefully on June 25, 2020, one month shy of her 106th birthday. At 105 years old, she was the University’s oldest known living alum, still attending homecoming and sorority events. In 1933, Daisy was initiated into Nu Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Our prayers and condolences are with her daughter, Marian Alston ’70, and her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cheatham Alston ’32.
She will be deeply missed by the Yellow Jacket family.
Daisy is shown here at her 80th Class Reunion during Homecoming 2016.
